otherwise we're elsewhere

the second visit to elsewhere was today, and this is a photo of our little forum in one of the larger open areas there. our assignment is to draw specific individual spaces inside the building that we've chosen, to be used as a sort of map when finished. (it's so overwhelming!) we also got to play with some of the objects and arrange them into "visual puns"... however, I regret that the few that I came up with may be too risque for posting here. maybe later.

caring is creepy

our drawing class visited an amazing place today, aptly titled elsewhere.
this building houses the story of a woman who loved things. all things, and she cared enough about them to keep them for most of her life. you know those places owned by eccentric people who hoard things and never throw anything away, and end up with a house full of stuff and a little path to walk through? that's what elsewhere was, but now has been turned into an interactive art gallery/tribute to the eclectic. I loved it. It takes up two buildings downtown and is chock full of everything. really, everything. if you can name an object, it's probably there. it has that smell that you expect from an old store or attic, and has creaky floors and peeling plaster--the works. I've never been to a public place quite like it.

I left feeling as though I had to switch gears and snap out of the elsewhere environment. it was bizarre how I felt removed from my day when I got back to my car... I didn't even know what I was supposed to do next, or what my plans had been for the afternoon. I'm sure I'll be thinking about the experience for the next few days!

sketchbook assignment: object vignettes

Washington, you see.

Our first year class took a field trip to Washington, DC over the weekend to take in the sights, visit museums and exhibits, and more importantly, (I think) do a little bonding. My experience included all of these things as well as enjoying great food and getting lots of exercise, and having many great laughs.
Perhaps next time there will be more bellydancing!

Tuesday Suzanne surprised our drawing class with exciting news... she made reservations for 30 at El Carreton for all of us to go out to lunch and draw! (Yes, I'm rubbing it in to all you poor kids who aren't in her section!)

sketchbook assignment: furniture rendered

Our assignment was to explore different media (marker, watercolor, color pencils, etc.) on various papers to get a feel for what we like. This was related to a color rendering we were assigned next.

scanners are very cool.

I had no idea how cool neon colored pens would be when scanned. This is a preliminary outline for our one-point perspective assignment, and is drawn on trace paper.

Here are the preliminary thumbnails from the Moore building assignment that I'm finally getting around to posting!

presentation time rolls around [again!]

Our first design board we've ever created was presented today. The class was divided into groups and each group was assigned a building on campus to study and then create drawings and diagrams of. The selected building for my group was the Moore Humanities and Research Administration building on Spring Garden. We were required to include three perspective drawings from each group member [=15 total], five drawings of architectural details, three diagrams, and one statement about the building. We selected a muted color scheme of pale turquoise, light and dark grey, and a muted orange. Our drawings were black and white, and we chose to mat a few of them in black.

Our group entered the presentation room feeling confident; we seemed to have an overall feeling of contentment with our process and final result. That remained so until I spoke last during our turn, and coined a new phrase, "linear line". You never know what you'll get during presentation day, except the guarantee that I will say something completely silly out of nervousness!

Our assignment was to draw 25 scale figures of our own creation, having been inspired by our research. I liked trying to imagine people in various states of walking, sitting, and standing.
Lying down was the most difficult position for me to figure out, since my little people are minimal in body parts. I like the style I ended up with, and think it will continue to get better.

Technically I wasn't drinking anything... perhaps I should have been!
This was the first time I had ever been in a public (non-UNCG) place to draw my surroundings. It felt a little weird at first, and Barnes & Noble was very crowded at the time so I had no place to sit for a while. I dreaded going out and doing this assignment all week, and was scolding myself once I got started because I actually enjoyed it. It would be great fun to do this often if I were especially skilled in drawing. Practice must be the way to get there!

Quantity prevailed over quality this time I must say. The sewing supplies would be really cute if done well, so one day I may try it again.

drawing from Lead Pencil art exhibit

This is my drawing from a sketch of part of an exhibit at the Weatherspoon art gallery here at UNCG. I used three different pens to achieve different line widths. I enjoyed the challenge after a few minutes of drawing, but was quite apprehensive before. Drawing = anxiety!!!!!!

a mess!

Our homework assignment was to draw a messy or cluttered area.
I drew the dishes my husband washed and left out to dry. (What a man, I've barely washed dishes over the last 16 months! He's awesome!) Fortunately for me, there weren't that many, and there weren't a million utensils to draw. That would really suck.
It ended up not filling the 11 x 17 page. That is a hard thing for me to do, to figure out how big to draw things...
